Accessibility at Terminal A
At Newark Liberty International Airport’s new Terminal A, accessibility is thoughtfully integrated into every part of the passenger journey. Our goal is to create a welcoming, comfortable, and inclusive environment for all travelers, including those with visible and non-visible disabilities.
Sensory Rooms for Neurodivergent Travelers
Terminal A features two dedicated sensory rooms designed to support neurodivergent passengers and those who may benefit from a calm, controlled environment:
- One located before security, which features a himalayan salt wall to reduce stress through negative oxygen ions.
- One located after security, which boasts a plane simulator room for passengers to adjust to the environment of an aircraft.
These spaces offer a peaceful setting to relax, decompress, and prepare for travel. Both rooms are certified by the Anderson Center for Autism, ensuring they meet high standards for sensory-friendly design.
Adult Changing Room
Terminal A includes a fully equipped adult changing room near Gate A28, designed to support passengers with mobility needs and their caregivers. Features include:
- A mechanical lift system to assist passengers onto a large changing bed
- Accessible toilet facilities with support handles
This space ensures dignity, comfort, and ease for travelers requiring additional assistance.
Service Animal Relief Areas
A conveniently located service animal relief area near Gate A7 and outside Arrivals provides a clean and accessible space for traveling companions on four legs.
Accessible Wayfinding
Braille signage is installed throughout Terminal A to support passengers who are blind or have low vision, helping make navigation through the terminal more intuitive and independent.
Sunflower Lanyard Program
Terminal A participates in the Sunflower Lanyard Program, a globally recognized initiative that allows passengers with non-visible disabilities to discreetly signal that they may need additional assistance or understanding during their journey.
Airline Accessibility Features
Accessibility continues onboard with our airline partners:
- Air Canada flights offer French closed captioning
- JetBlue flights offer Spanish closed captioning
These features enhance the in-flight experience for passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Security & Assistance Programs
Terminal A is committed to making the security process more accessible:
- A designated ADA screening line is available at security checkpoints
- TSA at Terminal A participates in the TSA Cares program, which provides additional assistance for travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or special needs
