RUNWAY 4L-22R REHABILITATION PROJECT – NIGHTLY & WEEKEND CLOSURES

Runway 4L-22R will be closed for rehabilitation work as part of a $121 million rehabilitation project, with night and weekend closures continuing through the end of 2025. While the most extensive phase of construction concluded in early June, ongoing work is necessary to complete this major infrastructure project safely and efficiently.

To minimize operational impacts during this period, the FAA will redirect flight activity to the airport’s other runways. While Runway 4L-22R is closed, Runways 4R-22L and 11-29 will remain operational. Adverse weather and other construction activities may limit use of alternate runways.

Passengers are advised to check with their airline for any updates as flight delays, schedule changes, or diversions may occur.

About the Project:

The rehabilitation of Runway 4L-22R began in March 2025 to meet FAA safety standards and ensure long-term runway reliability. Runways are typically resurfaced every 10 years, and this critical infrastructure investment addresses significant wear and includes a full-scale upgrade of the 11,000-foot runway. The project features a new runway surface, upgraded lighting and LED signage, installation of underground electrical infrastructure, and enhanced drainage systems.

Planned more than a year in advance, the Port Authority worked closely with the FAA and airlines to minimize disruptions - coordinating flight schedules and air traffic control staffing to maintain smooth operations.

These improvements will help ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of airport operations for years to come. We appreciate travelers’ patience and understanding as this major modernization effort continues.

CORBIN STREET RAMP NOW CLOSED

As part of the ongoing modernization of the road network leading into Port Newark and the adjacent Elizabeth Port Authority Marine Terminal, the ramp from eastbound Port Street to southbound Corbin Street will be closed for approximately one year beginning 8:00PM on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Completion of this work will enhance safety, improve air quality, and reduce congestion in the area. During the closure, all vehicular traffic will be detoured via Marlin and Kellogg streets.

Employees, NJ Transit customers, and P6 Economy Parking customers accessing Newark Liberty International via northern roadways are encouraged to allow additional travel time due to possible congestion from the ramp closure.

Access more information and a map of planned roadway improvements here.
