What to know about connecting flights
EWR has three terminals (A, B, and C) so it is important to check where your connection may be. It is possible that your first flight may land in one terminal and your next flight will depart from another. Always plan extra time to travel between terminals, as most customers will need to go through TSA screening again. Be sure to check the flight information displays located throughout the every terminal or your airline app for your flight’s next gate. All terminals are accessible by AirTrain, which is free to ride between terminals.
If you are a United Airlines customer arriving in Terminal A or Terminal C and have a connecting flight in either terminal, you do not need to go through TSA screening again. United Airlines offers a complimentary inter-terminal shuttle bus.
Other important notes about connecting flights:
- If you are arriving internationally and connecting to a U.S. flight, U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires you to go through customs, collect your bags at baggage claim, recheck them, and pass through security again.
- If you booked separate tickets, you may be required to complete full arrival procedures. That includes claiming checked bags, and then checking-in and dropping your bags with the connecting airline.

United Airline Customers with connecting flights in Terminal A or C
If you have an United Airlines connection in another terminal, you can use the free United shuttle to get to your other terminal and skip security.
The complimentary inter-terminal shuttle bus is available at gates A28, B67 (drop-off only), and C71. Locate United shuttles stops. opens in a new tab
Please note, the shuttle runs one way between each terminal, meaning passengers in Terminal B cannot use it to to go Terminal A or C.
United Airlines operates this shuttle and the schedule is subject to change at their discretion.

Get to your connecting flight on AirTrain
The AirTrain connects passengers between terminals at EWR Airport. If your connecting flight departs from a different terminal, use the AirTrain to get to your next terminal. The AirTrain is free for trips between terminals. Please allow extra time for airline check-in and security when connecting from terminal to terminal.
The AirTrain does not connect directly to Terminal A. Once you arrive to the Terminal A AirTrain station, you can reach the terminal by:
- A free shuttle bus: the bus is located outside the station and runs between 4:00 a.m and 11:59 p.m ET. A shuttle comes every 5-10 minutes. Once on board, shuttle bus service takes approximately 5 minutes to reach Departures with light traffic.
- Walking: Skip the shuttle bus and walk approximately 15 minutes to the Terminal via a covered pathway.
We are working hard on enhancing the AirTrain to connect directly to Terminal A in the future.
